Background of the Study

Community health workers (CHWs) have emerged as a crucial component in expanding healthcare access, particularly in underserved and rural areas. These individuals, often from the communities they serve, provide basic healthcare services, health education, and act as intermediaries between healthcare providers and the population (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). In many developing countries, including Nigeria, the scarcity of trained healthcare professionals, particularly in rural regions, has exacerbated the healthcare accessibility gap. CHWs play a critical role in mitigating these shortages by providing primary healthcare services such as maternal and child health care, disease prevention, and health promotion (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2024).

Yobe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, faces significant healthcare challenges, including a lack of sufficient healthcare infrastructure, limited healthcare personnel, and high poverty levels (Eze & Yusuf, 2024). The state’s rural areas, where a majority of the population resides, experience the most significant healthcare access issues. In these areas, CHWs are often the first point of contact for healthcare services, providing essential services like immunization, antenatal care, and treating common ailments (UNICEF, 2023). Despite their important role, CHWs in Yobe State face challenges such as limited training, inadequate resources, and sometimes, insufficient community support. Understanding how CHWs function and how effectively they bridge healthcare gaps is crucial for improving health outcomes in the state.

This study will examine the role of community health workers in bridging healthcare gaps in Yobe State, exploring their contributions, challenges, and the potential for expanding their roles to improve healthcare access.

Statement of the Problem

Yobe State faces significant healthcare access challenges due to its large rural population, lack of healthcare facilities, and a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals. Although CHWs have been employed as a solution to address these gaps, their impact on healthcare access and service delivery in the state remains underexplored (Adebayo et al., 2024).

The effectiveness of CHWs in bridging healthcare gaps is hindered by several barriers, including limited training, inadequate remuneration, and lack of integration into the formal healthcare system. Moreover, some community members remain unaware of the roles CHWs play or are skeptical about their training and capabilities (Okafor et al., 2024). Given these challenges, it is important to investigate how CHWs contribute to improving healthcare outcomes and identify ways to optimize their effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of community health workers in providing healthcare services in Yobe State.

2. To examine the challenges faced by CHWs in delivering healthcare in rural areas of Yobe State.

3. To propose strategies for strengthening the role of CHWs in bridging healthcare gaps.

Research Questions

1. What role do community health workers play in providing healthcare services in Yobe State?

2. What are the challenges faced by CHWs in delivering healthcare services, especially in rural areas?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the effectiveness of CHWs in improving healthcare access?

Research Hypotheses

1. Community health workers in Yobe State significantly contribute to improving healthcare access in rural areas.

2. CHWs face challenges such as inadequate training, low remuneration, and limited resources in their healthcare delivery role.

3. Strengthening CHWs' roles will improve healthcare outcomes in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of CHWs in Yobe State, particularly in rural communities. It will evaluate the services they provide, the challenges they encounter, and their impact on health outcomes. Limitations include potential difficulty in reaching remote communities and obtaining accurate data from CHWs who may lack formal documentation of their activities.

Definition of Terms

• Community Health Workers (CHWs): Individuals trained to provide basic healthcare services, health education, and act as liaisons between the community and formal healthcare providers.

• Healthcare Access: The ability of individuals to obtain necessary medical care in a timely and effective manner.

• Primary Healthcare: Basic health services focused on prevention, treatment, and health promotion at the community level.
